How to Make Ice Lanterns for Candles

Elegant and easy to make

Elegant and easy to make, these ice lanterns can be illuminated with our tea lights or votive candles.

You will need:

How to:

  • Fill balloon with water. Carefully slip the lip of the balloon over the faucet or hose head, keep pressure applied to the balloon lip to avoid leaking water and fill balloons until desired size.
  • Tie well.
  • Place outdoors or in freezer.
  • Once the exterior is fully frozen, clip off the top of the balloon, turn up-side-down to drain water and peel away the remaining balloon. This took us about four hours outside in 18 degree weather!
  • Place candle inside of lantern. Depending on the size/shape, you may need to light the candles before placing in the lantern. Always burn votive candles within a glass votive cup and remain attentive to lanterns while candles are lit.
